JULY SPOTLIGHT ARTIST: STEFAN KARL STEFANSSON
I first had the privilege of meeting Stefan during our rehearsals for the National Tour of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"! After 3 weeks with the ensemble, I was wide-eyed with wonder at the New York landscape, and curious what type of performer could embody the mischief, agility, and timelessness of the internationally renowned "Grinch". Enter Stefan Karl. Initially intimidated by Stefan's tremendous creative prowess, it took some touring before I discovered more than his amazing professionalism and artistry. Over the course of 6 years I sat in delight and amazement as I continued to learn about his versatility, work ethic, collaboration, unique vision and natural fatherly attitude towards anyone in his sphere of living, particularly his loving and vibrant family. Quite simply put, I have never met a performer like Stefan Karl.
A lover of his Icelandic homeland, he is best known for playing the villain "Robbie Rotten" on Nick Jr.'s television show, "Lazy Town", which currently airs worldwide in over 103 countries. As the villain, Stefan Karl has been instrumental to the series and the success it has achieved, including Emmy Award nominations, as well as having won the 2006 BAFTA Award for "Robbie's Greatest Misses". As a star player on repertoire at the National Theatre, Stefan Karl also excelled in a variety of classical and contemporary starring- and character parts, such as the title role in Rostand's romantic tragedy "Cyrano De Bergerac", as the song and dance man Cosmo Brown in "Singin' in the Rain", the sufferable stage director Lloyd Douglas in "Noises Off" and Puck in "Midsummer Night's Dream". On tour, we also had the opportunity to see his divine cinematic work in "Polite People".
Stefan Karl is the founder of the reputable nonprofit organization "Rainbow Children" in Iceland, a powerful force and efficient charity fund raiser for rallying against child bullying, an organization which has now spread to Canada and is currently being introduced to the American public. This is but a short list of his many abilities, and a small representation of his inclusion, kindness, humor and professionalism. Though currently experiencing health challenges, Stefan is a driving force of love and creativity in the lives of those around him, and continues to have a legacy of joy, spontaneity, skill, mischief, and laughter! We are proud to celebrate him as our Artist of the Month!
